I’m a lot of things. An entrepreneur. A wife. A pony mom. A horseback rider. If you’d asked me to describe myself prior to 2018, I would have also said “sleep-deprived.”
Ten years ago, my husband and I started a business. Between getting it off the ground and growing our family—we have two young daughters now—we cornered the market on sleepless nights. Being chronically tired contributed to my stress, which in turn made it hard to sleep. It was debilitating. But I don’t care for sleeping pills, so I just dealt with it.
The first time my husband and I tried cannabis together was in 2018. We both use to smoke pot recreationally in our teens, but then left it behind as we got older. As an adult, it just wasn’t something that interested me anymore. When cannabis was legalized in Canada, we thought it’d be fun to try it again and ordered some from a dispensary online.
That night, we both had the best sleep we’d had in years. I slept through most of the night—it was amazing. I noticed immediately how much more relaxed I felt the next day, too. We tried it again the next night, and it had the same effect. After repeated use, we found that cannabis was consistently making a huge difference in the quality of our sleep and by extension our quality of life. We finally felt rested.
How It Helps
I can say with all honesty that I depend on THC and CBD to get through my everyday life. Without it, I can’t even get a good five to six hours of sleep; the minimum I need to function at my best the next day. With a balanced THC/CBD product, I don’t feel groggy or any other side effects the next morning. I just feel like I’ve gotten a great rest.
My preferred method is to vape an oil. I’ve tried gummies. They’re a good low-dose way to get into cannabis, but I prefer the immediate effect of vaping. I’ve also tried cannabis beverages. Occasionally, they’ve taken the place of a glass of wine at night to help me relax.
I look forward to more research, more widespread legalization, and a subsequent dropping of the stigmas that surround cannabis. I use it every night with no regrets. I’m a better mom, a better employee, and a better wife when I get a good night’s sleep. I hope that cannabis can help others, as well.
