I live and breathe horses. I have been riding since I was 11 years old. I’m now 61. In 1982 my husband and I started a Thoroughbred breeding farm that still keeps us busy. At one point we had 6 stallions and two farms with over 100 mares. With years of riding come the inevitable injuries, especially when your sport of choice is fox hunting. As a board member of the Masters of Fox Hounds Association, hunting took me to some wonderful places with some wonderful people. I fractured 4 vertebrate in my back fox hunting in Ireland one year, but luckily I haven’t had any long term effects.
When I was 54 and went through menopause my sleep patterns went out the window. Most nights I struggled to fall asleep and I woke up throughout the night. I started taking sleeping pills, but I was worried about the risk of getting hooked on them.
A few months ago, my son suggested I try a CBD oil. I went to high school in the 70s so I’m no stranger to cannabis. It was rampant, and everyone smoked it. So I was very open to trying CBD when I heard that it could help with my sleeping.
How it Helps
I vape CBD and put it on my tongue before bed. I find that the vape acts more quickly. CBD acts much differently than sleeping pills. Sleeping pills put you to sleep, but CBD stops your mind racing and makes you calmer and more relaxed. I feel better about using CBD because it’s natural and I don’t worry about it being habit forming. I also don’t feel groggy when I take CBD. If I wake up in the middle of the night, I take another vape and go back to sleep immediately.
I think the potential uses for CBD oil are incredibly exciting, not only for people, but for horses as well. I could see it being a great tool to calm a horse’s anxiety or offer a better alternative to pain management.
I am happy with the results I’ve had so far and glad that I can finally get a good night’s sleep without worrying about the side effects from sleeping pills.
